Hi there,

Coco Open Space – Further Skills: 27th-28th September

This is our personal invitation to the forthcoming CoCo Open Space – Further Skills workshop with JanPieter and Lilian, in Sheila's welcoming home in Edinburgh.

CoCo Open Space is a gentle interactive process with a main focus of bringing together co-counsellors with shared interests and common needs so that they can co-create a meaningful and relevant Co-Counselling cooperation that matters to them.

Once these shared interests have been clarified we will negotiate a program of further skills workshops for the weekend. As there are so many possibilities we shall run only those further skills workshops for which there is an interest from some of the people present at the Coco-Open Space.

At the end of Sunday afternoon we will pull everything together in such a way that people can support each other with moving their topic forward.

We will offer Further Skills workshops under the umbrella of four themes. Any co-counsellor who would like to offer a Further Skills workshop under one of these umbrellas is welcome. Please contact us.

1. Exploring your Here-and-Now: Radical acknowledgement
Potential workshops on offer: Exploring the Felt Sense in your body, Focusing: listening to your body sensations, Using voice and sounds, Hearing yourself think, Using dance and movement, ID check, Emotional expression: playing with the trigger, Physical nurturing: holding and being held, Facing up to and exploring a (too) big issue, Using drawing and painting, Writing, A fish-bowl group, Role-play

2. Your Here-and-Now: Give yourself a Future
Potential workshops on offer: Pain-to-Power, Being seen: Getting beyond Shame and guilt, The art of creating powerful questions.

Getting beyond past skeletons to create your future: Video-technique, The Miracle question, Turning your past into an asset

3. Develop your Future further and make it work
Potential workshops on offer: Dilemma and indecision, Life action contract, the Creation Spiral, Other support contracts.

4. Get more effective socially
Potential workshops on offer: Living with disagreements, Getting the best out of conflicts, ANSA (Aware Negotiation of Sexual Attraction)

If you cannot attend the workshop,
and still want to be involved in one or more workshops…

If you cannot be there at all but are interested in being included please email us your Topic of Interest or make a Topic poster and hand it in to Sheila. We will include it in the potential choices, offered as available for people to consider and group around.

Your Topic Poster

  • what topic or issue matters to you: title and description
  • what you would like to offer and what support you need
  • what type of cooperation arrangement you would like to have

If you can only attend part of the workshop…
You are welcome to attend this Open Space, even if you are not available for the whole weekend, though being there on Saturday morning will make it easier for you to negotiate time to share with others. You could then leave and return at an agreed time on Saturday or Sunday to work with those you identify as having a shared interest.

We recommend that if possible you pick the timeslots you will attend with the following priorities in mind:

1. The Saturday morning, the start-up of CoCo Open Space
2. The Sunday afternoon from 1600, when we finalise the action planning after this CoCo Open Space
3. The whole Sunday afternoon, as this is the lead-up to 2.
4. Saturday afternoon and/or the Sunday morning

Inform Lilian or JanPieter so that they can take your arrival into account.

Registration data

Date Saturday 27- Sunday 28 September 2014
Arrival 10 a.m. with opening circle 10.30.
Closing circle 5 p.m. both days. Bring lunch to share.

Conference: What matters most in the client and counsellor roles?

To clarify the question with a metaphor: being able to reverse a car is not sufficient enough for safe driving. In order to apply that reversing skill appropriately people need to be able to recognise critical situations such as a motorway, a cliff edge or cars coming from behind. The same is valid for co-counselling: applying co-counselling tools and skills require the client and counsellor to recognise some critical situations and to respond to them appropriately. Examples of these critical situations are losing the balance of attention as client, losing free attention as counsellor.

In other words, ‘What situations does a counsellor need to be able to recognise and skilfully deal with in order to function as a really supportive counsellor or co-worker?’, ‘What situations does a client need to be able to recognise and skilfully deal with in order to have a productive session?’

These questions are a rephrasing of the more technical worded questions: 'What session competencies does a client need to have in order to benefit from co-counselling in daily life?'  ‘What competencies does a counsellor need to have in order to function as a really supportive counsellor or co-worker?’ These questions arose from Marjan Tuk and JPs article ‘Credibility, Accreditation and Certification’ on CoCoInfo.

Our best hope for the conference is that we produce something that can be given back to the community.

The conference will take place the 6 May 2014 and Lilian Brzoska will host it in her house in Kirkcaldy, near Edinburgh.

    CoCo Open Space

    Purpose

The main aim of a CoCo Open Space workshop is to bring together co-counsellors with shared interests and common needs so that they can co-create a meaningful and relevant Co-Counselling cooperation. A positive side effect is that even from the start of CoCo Open Space people talk about things that really matter to them. CoCo Open Space is a good way of mixing people new to co-counselling with more experienced co-counsellors.

Stages in the CoCo Open Space process

Stage 1. People identify their topic with related offers and requests

They do this in one-to-one sessions.

Stage 2. People are supported to find others with shared or complementary interests

There are various ways how this can be done. Common to all these is that people create and display Topic Poster(s) with related offers and/or requests. On these posters other participants can indicate their interests, requests and offers of support.

Depending on the local situation and the size of group one or more approaches can be used to bring people together.
    Topic requests.jpg

    • The Market: one group of people set up stalls with their Topic Posters while the other groups walk around and explore what is of interest to them. After some time the next group man their stalls, so that the first group can explore the other Topics as well.
    • A Topic Circle: people say their names and the topics they would like to propose. Interested people can indicate their interest in the circle.
    • A Topic Wall displaying all Topic Posters with the names of the proposers.

Finally there is the cooperative planning of small Topic Group meetings for those people who have shared or complementary interests.

Stage 3. People in a Topic group co-create a Cooperation Arrangement

A Cooperation Arrangement can be very simple, such as a one-off meeting for coffee to share experiences, sharing a table during lunch or dinner or having a co-counselling session. Also people might become buddies, form a support group for the duration of the residential or run a workshop. There are also more complex Cooperation Arrangements, like a Cooperative Inquiry group.

    Two applications

One use of the CoCo Open Space approach is as the start-up of a residential workshop. Once people have created their cooperation arrangements, CoCo Open Space is formally finished. Afterwards the Topic Posters are displayed at a central place near to where people have their breaks, coffee and teas. In this way, cross-fertilisation of the various topics will happen which in turn generates new workshops and activities.

The actual planning of the workshops, the support groups and other events during the residential takes place after CoCo Open Space.

Secondly, the CoCo Open Space approach can also be used locally for a day or weekend workshop. This is especially useful as CoCo Open Space provides the opportunity for people to find co-counselling partners and to mix co-counsellors who have been on recent Fundamentals with people who have been co-counselling for quite a while.

In order to refine a cooperation arrangement, some CoCo Open Spaces provide the opportunity to offer and request a Taster workshop of an hour or more. In these workshops, experienced co-counsellors share their experiences with working on a topic, or run a taster of the skills workshop they have on offer.

    Networking:

How to use ‘CoCo Open Space – Scotland’ page on CoCoInfo.

The purpose of this CoCo Open Space page
To bring together Co-Counsellors who have shared interests without perhaps realising it, and to enable them to offer one another help and support. This might be by having sessions with one another or the support might be more practical.

This page will be updated after the forthcoming CoCo Open Space workshop at Sheila's.

If you would like to add a new Offer or Request or post a response, you can log in and do that yourself on CoCoInfo. There is an extensive Help file next to the page. You might want to contact Lilian Brzoska or JanPieter Hoogma and ask them to do that for you.

If you would like to contact a person listed, you can do it yourself or ask for the contact to be made through Lilian or JanPieter until you are confident with the process.
