Chrissie Jamieson

Dear all,

Chris Jamieson learned in December last year that she had an incurable cancer and the consultant didn’t know how long she had to live. Last Wednesday 15th February Chrissie died peacefully with her family around her in St. Columba’s Hospice in Edinburgh. Only a few people knew until last month.

Dear all,

Chris Jamieson learned in December last year that she had an incurable cancer and the consultant didn’t know how long she had to live. Last Wednesday 15th February Chrissie died peacefully with her family around her in St. Columba’s Hospice in Edinburgh. Only a few people knew until last month.

Chris at McCoCo 2016

Many of you will have met Chrissie through the years at co-counselling events. Her wonderful smile was famous for welcoming people at the many events she helped organise, such as the fifteen McCoCo events and the European CCI in 2008. She also ensured for many years that community days would take place each month, if not in Edinburgh, then somewhere else in Scotland. She hosted co-counselling fundamentals, community days, art workshops and support groups as well.  Chrissie put an enormous lot of personal effort into supporting the community.

There are three opportunities to say goodbye to Chrissie:

1. Chrissie’s Funeral Monday 6 March

Her family would like to welcome you to both of the following events in Edinburgh:

  • 1pm at Warriston Crematorium Lorimer Chapel

  • 3pm at the Quaker Meeting House

for a memorial meeting, up to an hour of sharing thoughts and memories of Chrissie followed by tea and cake.

The family has booked larger spaces so that any friends who would like to be there can feel welcome to join.

2. A Tree Planting ceremony during McCoCo at Wiston Lodge.

This tree will be dedicated to Chrissie.  Lilian Brzoska will facilitate this ceremony on Saturday afternoon 29 April. If you have wishes or suggestions for this ceremony, you can contact Lilian: liliannakennedyatgmail [dot] com.

McCoCo 2017: http://co-counselling.info/en/event/mccoco-2017

3. Donating to Chrissie’s Tree at Wiston Lodge

We think it is in Chrissie’s community spirit that all monies donated for this tree will go to Wiston Lodge, which is an organisation supporting communities. Children, young people and vulnerable adults to grow sustainable, positive futures.

Wiston Lodge:  http://www.wistonlodge.co.uk/general-info/welcome/more-about-the-work-we-do

You can donate by…

  • Paying from your on-line bank account to McCoCo, mentioning ‘Chrissie’s tree’

    Sortcode:089299     Account: 65687594

  • Making a cheque payable to McCoCo mentioning ‘Chrissie’s tree’

and send it to Sheila Lochrie.

The purpose of this CoCo Open Space page

To bring together Co-Counsellors who have shared interests without perhaps realising it, and to enable them to offer one another help and support. This might be by having sessions with one another or the support might be more practical.

If you would like to add a new Offer or Request or post a response, you can log in and do that yourself on CoCoInfo. There is an extensive Help file next to the page. You might want to contact Lilian Brzoska or JanPieter Hoogma and ask them to do that for you.

If you would like to contact a person listed, you can do it yourself or ask for the contact to be made through Lilian or JanPieter until you are confident with the process.

CCI Business Meeting Monor July 2016

1 Report from each community

a)    Netherlands

Mar 2016: annual gathering. About 10 people.   About 2 weekends per year.

Basic language is Dutch but if you visit then there are many people able to translate to English.

Last fundamentals was Sep-Oct 2015.  No takers so far this year.   New ideas for short open workshops, 1 day each, including some parts of coco.

Website: we have a newsletter for members based on the website.  We have also opened the possibility for non-members (non-co-counsellors) to register for the public events.   About 60 people have registered (!).  Now we just need to get them to come to an event.

Website also has all the info for CCI Netherlands 2017 – in English.    www.co-counseling.nl

JP has had a request from a group of 20-something women to run a coco event next year.

b)    England + Wales +NI

Things happen.  There are about 8 active teachers, including 1 new in his 30s last year, and a new volunteer keen to accredit herself.

We are having issues with getting people to come to core training, to become active afterwards, or to come to residentials.   Some of the problem is financial.

Some people don’t like the term “fundamentals” because of associations with fundamentalism.

Many communities have drop-in groups.

At Ringsfield Hall meeting in Suffolk, we are aiming to talk about how to bring more people in.

There is a lot of discussion about “coco light”, with some elements of coco but not all.   Most successful so far is “peer support network” started and funded via Mind (Mental Health charity).

There are quite a lot of weekend workshops, about 8-10 in the year.

Paper newsletter One to One: speak to John Talbut.

JP: I am sitting on a reserve fund of about £8,000.   This is for structural, innovative projects, like new networking websites, and so on.   If you think you will benefit from this, talk to JP.

Wales: some coco happening, no courses that we know about.

NI: no coco that we know about.

UK-maintained websites & email group:

There is a UK websites, http://www.co-counselling.org.uk/ .

There is also “ cocoinfo” http://co-counselling.info/en maintained in the UK but intended as an international website.  All workshops published on CoCoInfo are also automatically published on several other coco web sites.  The Coco info web site can also be used by any community to set up their internal newsletter.  Talk to JP about this.

Several individual teachers have their own websites.

Cocolist also exists: email discussion group, UK-based but worldwide.

c)     Scotland

Had community meeting 20 people in July.   Also meeting in Pitlochry.   Distances:  2.5 to 3 hour journeys mean that we rarely all meet together.   McCoCo happens in the borders of Scotland every May – Beltane.   McCoCo has visitors from a lot of different communities – Scotland England Netherlands, sometimes Germany and Israel, …

We have other events e.g. coco and the arts on Bute

Has an email newsletter.   Trying to produce a paper newletter.

There is also a Scottish web site: http://www.cocoscotland.co.uk/ .

d)    New Zealand

Summer and winter gatherings every year.   Community in Auckland, fundamentals in August.  Regular meetings.   “If you are visiting NZ, just contact one of us, we’ll welcome you.”   Quite small community.

e)    Germany

Last year 10 teachers were trained.

This year, small Germany + Netherlands coco residential meeting (mini-CCI).

Ongoing group meeting through the year.

We have collected some money in order to rebuild Haus Kloppenburg, 100,000EUR work will start in Jan 2018.  More money is still needed: donations welcome.

We get some financial support for individual projects for instance the ongoing coco group.

The Haus Kloppenburg association has existed for many years (since 1978).   There is now a new umbrella organisation DOG which has existed for 3 years, with a new committee, separate from Siglind and Johannes.

f)      Israel

Avi and Janice are teaching fundamentals in the prisons for 15 years.   Two graduates from the course have been active in Dror.  Hoping for more.

Arab-Jewish support group: every month, now for 40 years.   We invite anybody who is interested to join us (don’t have to be trained co-counsellors).

2 active teachers right now.   Janice finished a class recently in a Bedouin city in the south and will offer an intro for a group of young women in Tel Aviv.  She uses the title “the art of listening” to advertise co-counselling. The other teacher is Luiza.

We invite the RC community in Israel to our sessions gatherings which occur about every month. They invited Janice and Luiza to a day workshop – some contact.

We posted the invitation for CCI Nov 16 on the RC facebook page.  This was allowed by RC page manager.

We will be offering a fundamentals course (56 hours) in Hebrew for public school teachers where they earn credits for their teaching credentials. It is advertised in a course book offered by the teachers' union in Israel, recommended by the Ministry of Education.

g)    USA

Communities are spread across the USA.   Connecticut/Massachusetts, Michigan, California, North Carolina.

NC is a small community in a big state (11 hours edge to edge).  We rely a lot on email and web.   The church is a big community; we hope to offer mini-mini-coco to people via the churches.

New England Teachers meet every 6 weeks.  We have recently developed a process for what to do if one individual does anything which is not in line with the contract.   We also revised the teacher accreditation document.   New Haven also has a regular meeting: Fred has been very active.

Our big problem is “how to bring people into coco”.   We have created videos, put them on the web.  Too soon to tell if this will be successful in bringing more people in.

There are a few teachers who are active in New England and Michigan.

We have had some contact with a “splinter group” of co-cos in North West of USA.

CCI happens every April and there is also a fall (autumn) workshop and a women’s workshop.

Community committee meets every month, open to all.   This is the group that takes all business decisions.

Michael has an annual report, 8 pages.   Available if there is interest.

h)    Hungary

Agota has run 2 fundamentals in late 2015 & early 2016.   Saci was involved in the 2nd one and may become another active teacher.  Csaba may also do some teaching.

Szilvi is organising monthly meetings.

Organising CCI always gives us a boost.

We have a website – also in English.  And a facebook page.

A young coco in Hungary created a google map with teardrops for co-counsellors.   Wondering if this might be extended worldwide.

Hoping to go through an accreditation process which might open up the possibility of extra funding for those wanting to learn co-counselling.

Agota has a personal thought that basic coco might be extended by adding elements of Mindfulness and other techniques.   The goal is to spread more awareness in the outside world.s

This CCI used a Google form to collect info on travel needs of participants.   It worked well.   [Comment by Kim: any data entered to Google is visible to Google as a corporation.  This put me off using this method.]

Magda: there is a person-centered counselling community.   We are hoping to give some basic info on co-counselling to this community.

i)      Ireland

No recent fundamentals.   Last year (2015) was a personal financial risk for the organisers.  In the end it was OK since another group came in to fill the remaining space, and there was a number of late bookings, but the few remaining Irish co-cos are not wanting to take on that risk again.

Declan has contacted Termonfeckin about a possible date in 2020 but this is not definite;  Ireland might drop out of the cycle, but it might not.   Especially if there is support from other communities.  Wait for more news!

j)      Other countries and cross-national

Joke and Agota expect to teach in Sweden some time in the next year.   Open to support from other countries if people are interested.

Books:  Fred wrote a book.  There are many other books in different countries and people are working on translations.

Agota would like to follow up on the event in Munster in March 2016 which included the Netherlands and Agota from Hungary.   Have a vision to create an international team.   We would like to involve people from other countries whenever language permits.

France?   Idea from Celia.   Marlies has one contact.

Spain? Ask Jenni

2 Coco – new name

[not discussed during the meeting]

3 Next CCIs

2-6 Nov 2016 Israel

18-23 April 2017 USA

30 July – 5 August 2017 Netherlands.   Teachers workshop starting on Fri beforehand.

Mid-Jan 2018 New Zealand. Same venue as last time.

April 2018 USA.   Usually 3rd week. Dates not yet fixed

28 July – 4 August 2018  Scotland.  Possibly a teacher’s workshop after that.

2019 will be Germany – just beginning to think about it. Not confirmed yet.

2020 would be Ireland – not yet confirmed.

Other gatherings (not CCIs)

New Zealand has summer and winter gatherings

McCoCo in Scotland every May

4 New name for business meeting

Agota: Would like to change “business meeting” to “community meeting” on the grounds that “business meeting” puts off newcomers.   And that this is mainly a gathering of the global community.  I want a name which expresses that.

2 people object:

JP Want to have a name that reaches out, rather than internal.  Do like to replace “business meeting”.

Csaba: like “business meeting”.

Other ideas:  “Community Exchange”.  “Community sharing”.  “global community meeting”.

Suggested: all these ideas passed to organisers of next CCI. No need to take a decision here.

5 Content structure of co-counselling

[not discussed during the meeting]

6 CCI finance guideline

Alan:  I produced this document, initially as an informal response to a request, then I generalised it.   It is a checklist of things to think about when planning a CCI, mainly from the perspective of Money but also covering other aspects e.g. room registration:  CCI as a small business.   (It doesn’t have anything to say about actual co-counselling)

It has had a few comments from Verena and has also been seen by JP, Saci and Emmy.   Not yet seen by USA or NZ.   It is available if anyone wants to see it.   I feel the simplest way forward is that it can remain as a personal suggestion;  it could be “adopted” as a guideline (after further rounds of comments) if there is desire to do that, but not sure if that would be worthwhile.   It contains no rules: suggestions only.

It could be put on a website.  JP would like to add some material on negotiating skills.

Saci: very thorough and very detailed.

Editorial:

Hi there,

In 2018 the Annual European CCI is due to return to the UK and, following tradition, some Co-Counsellors in Scotland would like to take a lead in hosting the event in Scotland as in 1991, 1999, and 2008.

If so, what do we want to offer to interested Co-Counsellors from around the World?

There are several organising traditions in CCI. On the one hand, there is the view that it is sufficient to organise a venue and publicity. The CCI meeting itself is left to the attendees to get themselves organised. Sometimes a group of interested people come together beforehand to cater for some aspects of the programme e.g. last year in Ireland.

On the other hand, CCIs in the Netherlands, USA, Germany and McCoCo are facilitated by teams of committed people who not only organise the publicity & the venue, but also design a developed grant policy so people from far away or poorer countries can attend, look after food and dietary requirements, set up and maintain a functional trust person/ghost-buster system, work with a general theme and prepare welcoming workshops, opening circles, etc. Obviously this approach requires more support and cooperation than purely organising a venue and publicity.

What style of organisation do we want to offer to interested Co-Counsellors from around the World?

To explore this topic and gauge support we will offer a CoCo Network Forum in Edinburgh sometime between 23 May and 8 June. You can indicate also that you are interested but not available at these dates.

In order to find a date please click here and indicate in the Doodle date-planner which dates you are available.

Best wishes,

Lilian, Geoff and JanPieter.

See what is already on offer at McCoCo!

CoCo Open Space
And there is plenty of room for spontaneously organised workshops too. Thursday evening and Friday morning we organise again a CoCo Open Space in order to create together the McCoCo experience. This is a gentle inter-active process with as main focus to bring together co-counsellors with shared interests and common needs so that they can co-create a meaningful and relevant Co-Counselling cooperation during McCoCo. A positive side effect is that from the start of CoCo Open Space people talk about things that really matter to them. CoCo Open Space is a good way of mixing people new to McCoCo with more experienced co-counsellors.

Exhibition
Kate Golten and Lindsay Gibson have responded positively to the invitation to share their art with McCoCoers. Inspired by Sheila Lochrie to look for a way of offering an inclusive art experience, the 2016 art exhibition will challenge participants to actively engage with the creation of an installation.
The roots for the form of this piece of art started with Kate and Lindsay seeking common ground (other than the obvious co-counselling). They quickly found this in their shared affinity with the town of Paisley, Kate through her ancestors and Lindsay through her upbringing. To the development of this connection, Kate has brought her deep respect for beautiful cloth and her ongoing exploration of tents as potentially safe spaces. Lindsay has brought her vision of darning as a means to interweave the acts of destruction and reparation into one creative expression.
The resulting proposal is process oriented in that the physical object which is created is not the art in and of itself. Of equal value are the sensory experiences and the stories that feed into and come out of the process of collaboratively making a specific metaphorical object with a selective collection of people, in such a precious time and space.
With Paisley's rich history of weaving, thread making and the manufacture of silk, cotton and linen, it is not surprising that this work will be textile based. There will be a large cloth, a terrible hole in the said cloth and materials with which we can choose and use to mend the hole together. No previous textile based art making experience is required. You are cordially invited to come and join in this art exhibition.  There you will engage with materials in a structured way which allows space for individual and collective reflection on various potentially resonant themes, making ART all the while.

Workshops

Safety and Creativity
Offered by Kate Golten

The greatest tragedy of the family is the unlived lives of the parents.Carl Jung
A co-counselling workshop to look at the past-what stopped us from living a full creative life; to look at the present-how can we use safety in our sessions, in the here and now, to help us be more creative, to help us deal with critics (internal and external); to look to the future –being more creative in our lives.

See yourself succeeding and being visible Being Successful
Offered by Lilian Brzoska

A co-counselling workshop challenging our hidden fears to disappear or be transformed to fuel in our transformation in the world.

Looking after an ailing partner or parent
Offered by Marjan Tuk & Hans van Os

The name given to me by my parents is Geoffrey Hamilton Rowe.  I am know by many names.  Geoffrey, Geoff, Strijder, Mr Rowe, Rowe, Chuck to give but a few.  Some I engage with easily and effortlessly, others grate and make me cringe.

Resilience
Offered by JanPieter Hoogma

I think I can offer this workshop based on my experience of coping the last four years with chronic pain, a stroke and septicaemia. And I am still alive and kicking. In this co-counselling workshop you are invited to explore how you can increase your own resilience.

Other Workshops likely to happen
Dancing: line dancing and five-rhythms. The McCoCo Ceilidh where people share their poems, art, songs, stories, improvisations and dances the Scottish way.

Beltane Fire Celebration

Co-facilitation focus offered by Lilian Brzoska

We will be together over May weekend which includes the second part of the Celtic festival of Beltane on 1st May. This is the Festival which welcomes in the Sun, celebrating Fertility in The Land and her people. The Beltane Fire is actually lit on 30th April, when marrying couples jump over the embers of the fire. The Earth Goddess and The Green Man are honoured, as Spring burgeons forth leaves and Nature gives birth to her young. May Day is also celebrated in Britain as a national worker's holiday, expressing solidarity with the International Worker's Movement. This reflects the notion of blessings all around the world being sent, inherent in the Beltane Celebration of Nature in both Masculine and Feminine forms. The Green Man is carved into many churches because many stone masons honoured the Old Ways while building christian churches. Rosslyn Chapel in Midlothian has well over 100 Green Men of different ages carved into her Magdalene Chapel walls.

We would like co-create a CoCo Beltane May-Fire Festival. As we all arrive on 1st May, perhaps we could co-create the fire for 2nd May, weather permitting. We could also have a preparation workshop around releasing burdens and making annual commitments, which can happen, whether or not we have the weather for the fire wood to be dry and lightable. Even with great weather the fire can only happen if we have wood gatherers willing to assist the process.

McCoCo Conference - the day after

Empowering the Client-in-charge to improve daily life - part II

We explored this topic already last year and it is so interesting that it is on the agenda again. What can we learn as client in co-counselling from Carol Dweck when she talks about the ‘Growth Mind Set’. We can ask the same question about the ‘Solution focused approach’ in coaching.

During the Conference we will adopt the ‘Co-operative enquiry’ method developed by John Heron and Peter Reason. We will experiment upon ourselves with the different suggestions from traditional co-counselling, the ‘Growth Mind set and the ‘Solution focused approach’.

The sharing of our experiences will deepen our Self Understanding and help us be more effective as Co-workers supporting others to serve themselves well as clients. Our best hope for the conference is that we produce something that can be given back to the community.

The conference will take place the 3 May 2015 and Lilian Brzoska will host it in her house in Kirkcaldy, near Edinburgh.

Come to McCoCo 2016

Four Days !!!  From Thursday 28 April 6 pm to Monday 2 May 3 pm

Wiston Lodge

Co-Counsellors living in Scotland are delighted to offer the McCoCo 2016 residential workshop. We are offering this exciting, international, challenging, supportive, fun space from Thursday evening 28 April to Monday 2 May. This will be the 18th! McCoCo residential workshop. The Monday is a Bank Holiday for everyone in the UK.

We have booked again the wonderful venue 25 miles from Edinburgh called Wiston Lodge. It is a magnificent 19th century Lodge house, set in its own extensive wooded grounds. The re are several spaces suitable for different kinds of workshops including a sports hall for dancing and a big room for the opening circle. For more pictures of the venue, click here.

Exciting WORKSHOPS are coming to McCoCo 2016

Since McCoCo 2010 we are inviting people to offer workshops in advance. This resulted in very exciting and well-prepared offerings and inspired even more spontaneously offered workshops!  Co-counsellors registered with CoCoInfo, the CCI Co-Counselling web site, can view which exciting workshops have been offered beforehand in 2010,   20112012, 2013 and in 2014. There you can see how much innovation and inspiration McCoCo has been offering. For McCoCo 2016 we are going to this again. To view these workshops, you need to log in!

The actual workshop program is open and will be created by McCoCo's participants at the spot. For this we organise a CoCo Open Space. Anyone can offer a co-counselling workshop or ask for a topic group, massage, meditation and indeed anything what makes your and other people's heart sing. As well as participating in workshops and support groups or simply having co-counselling sessions you can choose to enjoy dancing, chatting with people from overseas in front of a log fire, walking in the lovely grounds or in the nearby Tinto hills etc.

Afterwards, the 3 May, there is the McCoCo Conference 2016 near Edinburgh! '

HESITATING...?

New to Co-Counselling?
We extend an especially warm welcome to Co-Counsellors who have recently completed Fundamentals or who have not been to an event like this before. This event provides an opportunity for you to meet Co-Counsellors from throughout Scotland and beyond. We will offer a workshop especially for first-timers at the beginning of the workshop. We encourage also the forming of buddies.

Feeling rusty...?
No problem, the only requirements for having sessions is to be able

  • to give your free, aware caring attention to your client
  • to refuse to enter into a session contract or to give a suggestion if you don't want to
  • to keep confidentiality

If you are able to do this, you will very quickly remember again what you have learnt earlier in Co-Counselling, especially when you experience the support, freedom and encouragement that McCoCo has on offer.

Scotland too far away or McCoCo difficult to travel to...?
As there are so many Co-Counsellors in Edinburgh we can possibly offer accommodation with Co-Counsellors in Edinburgh before and after McCoCo. Tick the relevant box on the booking form.

Anyway
If in doubt, talk to Chris Jamieson, 0131-332 4548
