Community or Network Organisation Event

CCI 2018 - Network Support Forum

English

Type of Event:

We offer a CoCo Network Forum in Edinburgh to gauge support and ideas about hosting the European CCI in Scotland as in 1991, 1999, and 2008.

If so, what do we want to offer to interested Co-Counsellors from around the World?

There are several organising traditions in CCI. On the one hand, there is the view that it is sufficient to organise a venue and publicity. The CCI meeting itself is left to the attendees to get themselves organised. Sometimes a group of interested people come together beforehand to cater for some aspects of the programme e.g. last year in Ireland.

On the other hand, CCIs in the Netherlands, USA, Germany and McCoCo are facilitated by teams of committed people who not only organise the publicity & the venue, but also design a developed grant policy so people from far away or poorer countries can attend, look after food and dietary requirements, set up and maintain a functional trust person/ghost-buster system, work with a general theme and prepare welcoming workshops, opening circles, etc. Obviously this approach requires more support and cooperation than purely organising a venue and publicity.

What style of organisation do we want to offer to interested Co-Counsellors from around the World?

Please feel free to attend with curiosity only, perhaps with some suggestions. There is no commitment expected. smiley

McCoCo Conference 2017

English

Type of Event:

How can we inspire and support international engagement in CCI?

Questions we think of at the moment are: How can we support people with a different first language from English at the CCI 2018 in Scotland? How can we  bring people internationally together who do not know of each other how useful it can be to connect to each other? How can tools as Skype and ooVoo contribute to this? How can we bridge the various generations within CCI?

During the Conference we will adopt the ‘Co-operative enquiry’ method developed by John Heron and Peter Reason. The sharing of our experiences will deepen our Self Understanding and help us be more effective in supporting others to engage internationally. As usual for the McCoCo Conference this sharing will result into a report to the coco community at large, published on CoCoInfo.

The conference will take place the 2 May 2017 and Lilian Brzoska will host it in Sheila's house in Edinburgh.

McCoCo Conference 2015

English

Type of Event:

Empowering the Client-in-charge to improve daily life

What can we learn as client in co-counselling from Carol Dweck when she talks about the ‘Growth Mind Set’. We can ask the same about the ‘Solution focused approach’ in coaching.

During the Conference we will adopt theCo-operative enquiry’ method developed by John Heron and Peter Reason. We will experiment upon ourselves with the different suggestions from traditional co-counselling, the ‘Growth Mind set and the ‘Solution focused approach’.

The sharing of our experiences will deepen our Self Understanding and help us be more effective as Co-workers supporting others to serve themselves well as clients. As usual for the McoCo Conference this sharing will result into a report to the coco community at large, published on CoCoInfo.

The conference will take place the 5 May 2015 and Lilian Brzoska will host it in her house in Kirkcaldy, near Edinburgh.

McCoCo Conference 2014

English

Type of Event:

What matters most in the client and counsellor roles?

To clarify the question with a metaphor: being able to reverse a car is not sufficient enough for safe driving. In order to apply that reversing skill appropriately people need to be able to recognise critical situations such as a motorway, a cliff edge or cars coming from behind. The same is valid for co-counselling: applying co-counselling tools and skills require the client and counsellor to recognise some critical situations and to respond to them appropriately. Examples of these critical situations are losing the balance of attention as client, losing free attention as counsellor.

In other words, ‘What situations does a counsellor need to be able to recognise and skilfully deal with in order to function as a really supportive counsellor or co-worker?’, ‘What situations does a client need to be able to recognise and skilfully deal with in order to have a productive session?’

These questions are a rephrasing of the more technical worded questions: 'What session competencies does a client need to have in order to benefit from co-counselling in daily life?'  ‘What competencies does a counsellor need to have in order to function as a really supportive counsellor or co-worker?’ These questions arose from Marjan Tuk and JPs article ‘Credibility, Accreditation and Certification’ on CoCoInfo.

My best hope for the conference is that we produce some results that can be given back to the community.

Together we will design the conference program so that we can inspire each other with what matters most to us in our client and counsellor roles.

The conference will take place the 6 May 2014 and Lilian Brzoska will host it in her house in Kirkcaldy, near Edinburgh.

CCIS Special AGM 2013

English

Type of Event:

This is a Special General Meeting with as only proposal to wind up CCIS.

This SGM will instruct a subsequent AGM of its recommendations.  Both meetings could be held on the same day.

Only paid-up members are entitled to vote at this AGM and any SGM.

Financial aspects need to be taken into account.  If we decide to close CCIS, the finances will need to be considered at the SGM, which will instruct a subsequent AGM.

The main reason behind the proposal to wind up CCIS: to make more time for co-counselling rather than spending it on meetings, administration and bureaucracy.  Further reasons are detailed in the e-mail sent by LB on 26 September 2012

Special meeting: Scottish subscription magazine and networking weekend

English

Type of Event:

Scottish Subscription Magazine

During the workshop on Saturday the future of the hard copy Zest newsletter/magazine will be discussed.  This was also covered at a CoCo Cafe AGM table.

An important issue is whether a subscription-based stand-alone newsletter could be viable, and if it is not, how its continuation could be guaranteed financially should CCIS agree to dissolve itself as a Constitutional body.

One possibility would be to use some of the residual CCIS funds, if this was agreed during any planned wind-down of CCIS.  Another possibility might be to get support from the Coco Foundation.

Workshop about Networking

The Sunday workshop is set-up to explore the routes open to establish effective networking among co-counsellors in Scotland, With this we mean finding ways to support co-counsellors to find meaningful and relevant connections among themselves. By doing so, we hope to increase a wider community awareness.

Holding both workshops over a single weekend should promote integrated discussion.  It will also allow people who need to travel to the workshops to make one trip rather than two.

McCoCo Conference 2013

English

Type of Event:

Supporting the networking among co-counsellors

There is a diversity of views of what is meant by “Networking”.  There is some commonality: increasing relevant connections among co-counsellors and finding ways to support those connections as well as wider community awareness.  We believe that facilitation the process of networking among co-counsellors is a valuable way forward and hope that this conference will contribute to a deeper insight into how we can achieve this.

My best hope for the conference is that we produce some end results that can be given back to the community. That can be anything arising from the conference, for instance sharing our experiences of teaching or being taught to be in charge of our session.  I myself am thinking of writing writing an article about Empowerment for CoCoPedia.

Together we will design the conference program so that we can inspire each other with what matters most to us around the Client-in-Charge and Empowerment.

The summary of sharings you can find in this mindmap made by Marjan.

McCoCo Conference 2012

English

Type of Event:

The day after McCoCo there will be the McCoCo Conference, this year held in Lilian’s house in Kirkcaldy, near Edinburgh.

The ‘Client in Charge of their Session’ is one of the cornerstones of the Co-Counselling approach. It might even be one of its Unique Selling Point, something that no-other approaches has on offer.  Directing one’s own session, following one’s own path and negotiating and agreeing the support desired with the caring and loving, free attention of the counsellor.

From a wider perspective, co-counselling promises people to get more and more in charge of their own lives, and more and more being able to shape their own world. Indeed, one of the Co-Counselling manuals has ‘changing your world’ as part of its title.

Empowerment
Providing people with the opportunities to acquire the skills and tools to be in charge of their session and/or in charge of their lives can be called empowerment.  Empowerment is not about bestowing power or authority on people. Like horses, one can point them to the water, but it is up to them to drink.

Empowerment theories provide also tools to assess how effective the empowering environment is.  This is ultimately assessed by the individual oneself:  one’s level of self-empowerment is recognised by feeling confident in their own capabilities of directing one's own session, life or destiny.

Empowering the Client in Charge of the session
Obviously empowering the Client goes further than empowering people to  be in charge of the session. Having said that, the co-counselling session is the most used place where people in the client role can practice, explore and increase all aspects of their autonomy.

Therefore the proposal is to focus the conference on how the teaching of co-counselling can support the clients to be really in charge of their sessions.  This leads to the following questions about supporting new co-counsellors to get really in charge of their session:

  • What skills, insights and experience do they as Client need to have?
  • What (teaching) environment, tools and concepts do we already have in Co-Counselling to support new co-counsellors?
(We will bring a new tool developed in the Netheralnds.)
  • What (teaching) environment, tools or concepts are further needed?

My best hope for the conference is that we produce some end results that can be given back to the community. That can be anything arising from the conference, for instance sharing our experiences of teaching or being taught to be in charge of our session.  I myself am thinking of writing writing an article about Empowerment for CoCoPedia.

Together we will design the conference program so that we can inspire each other with what matters most to us around the Client-in-Charge and Empowerment.
